British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of entry passages down to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their valour," he added. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
