EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
